“Inspired by the graphic nature of this pen, I designed packaging that would feature it as a modern art piece, resembling a museum display case.”

Looking at Larissa Brandao’s online portfolio (which has some nice designs, and interesting ideas) made me think of an interesting question: Is it ethical for a designer (e.g., a student) to create an ONLINE portfolio with designs that use very high-profile client names (in Larissa’s case we have The Cloisters, Samsonite, Dairy Queen, Penguin Books, to mention just a few), and post it online “in the wild”, without explicitly noting which of the designs included in the portfolio are purely speculative, and not actually a work commissioned by any of “the clients”? Might some potential future clients find this deceptive or misleading? Might the actual institutions whose brands, and registered trademarks are being used in the portfolio (and potentially infringed) find it objectionable, or worse, actionable (unless they commissioned the work)?
