Curating the very best packaging design

Student Work – Cassandra Cappello

Designed by Cassandra Cappello | Country: Canada

“This is a student project for an invented brand and redesign of a line of milk and juice cartons. These packages are specifically for milk, chocolate milk, and strawberry banana juice. The shape is inspired by old metal milk containers and the minimalistic design allows this line of packages to stand out on shelves. The packages are also bilingual, written in both English and French.”

    This seems cute at first…

However, how are you supposed to know what you are buying? All the front labels are the same (unless that 5pt type underneath the logo is supposed to say something). You’d have to pick up the product and look on the back to even see what it is. Then comes another problem: how are you supposed to hold the larger ones? At least put a handle on it. It looks like if you try to hold it from the lid, it’ll pop right off. I know it’s student work, but I would make sure this was more of a conceptually usable design before putting into my portfolio.

Those are quite cool, sort of a new take on cartons.

I agree with Selena. While it’s a cute package, it doesn’t showcase what the product is very well. I kind of thought milk but I wasn’t sure.
I think the issue here is with design education. Professors should be teaching more than just design, they should be teaching and preparing students for some of the marketing thinking behind design as well.
