“I redesigned the Sony packaging for their Vaio, Cyber Shot and EX ear buds. While researching the company, I found a letter from the CEO to stockholders explaining that Sony products “change the way people experience the world.” This statement inspired these packages, which have an outer sleeve with die cuts of the Sony logo and the product name on the back. On the inner boxes are images of nature that relate to the products inside. I wanted the packaging to be clean and simple, but still have an exciting and smart element that would accurately reflect the personality and functionality of Sony products.”

While I like the idea behind it, the packaging itself just doesn’t wow me. There’s not as much excitement as there could be, and the attempt at minimalism only comes off as boring. Furthermore, except for the Cyber Shot package, the font is actually hard to read due to the busy, dark pattern against black.

The Sony logo is well suited for a die cut due to it’s simple shape. The premise of the concept is also pretty sound. The cut-outs on the back do not work as well with the floating voids of the letters like B and R, but this portion should probably be printed – on both panels it’s a bit overdone anyway. Nice work, though!

It’s really bad to change such a good logotype for weak typography. 3 of 10.
