Rackare

Rackare

Designed by Ninja Print | Country: Sweden

“Rackare is a Swedish adaptation of the (in)famous party game “Cards Against Humanity”. After a few alterations to the gameplay and loads of new cards written and tested the guys over at Ninja Print asked me to give it a look of its own. The very appropriate black-and-white-cards-theme got to stay, since it’s simplicity goes well with that of the game. However, I felt the game needed a cheerful vibe so the black-and-white got paired with the big smiling logo in a clean minimalist design based on three colours. A third of the cards are white, two thirds are black and hence the top lid of the box has the same proportions of black and white. Its width is also one third of its length. Both these features create a number of fun ways to display the game in stores.”

Daytrader

Designed by Italic | Country: United States

“Daytrader is a really funny and educational game created by Samir Lyons. It’s a financial board game that brings you the thrills and chills of investing in the stock market but without real risk. It’s simple, educational and fun.

Italic was enlisted to give Daytrader a unique and playful look & feel.  The design draws inspiration from classic American business signage and simple currency-like illustrations as a tribute to the golden age of finance and Wall Street.  The Americana feel to the game adds a warm, approachable simplicity to the chaotic and complex world of economic affairs. Daytrader is designed so a wide range of people can enjoy the experience of playing, from families around the dinning room table, to finance gurus, students, board game geeks and beyond.”

Zombie Tarot

Designed by Headcase Design | Country: United States

“Quirk Books asked us to develop a zombie-themed tarot card deck. Rather than take a more typical overly-bloody horror approach, we conceptualized the project as a crazy, campy, late 50’s/early 60’s retro interpretation of a classic tarot deck. As B-Movie fanatics, we wanted to capture the off-beat zaniness those old movies have. We tried to bring a touch of wit and subtlety to the project, as well as a morbid sense of humor.”

Colorfall

Designed by Marbles: Brain Workshop | Country: United States

“At Marbles: The Brain Store, we believe there’s an almost innate sense of satisfaction that comes from setting up dominoes into elaborate design, then knocking them down and listening to their gentle click-clack sound.  And that’s all fine and dandy, don’t misunderstand. But where’s the color?  Where’s the whimsy? Where’s the ability to create striking images based on design cards or random ideas you have floating around in your noggin They’re all right here in Colorfall!

Our product itself was designed by Chrissy Quinlan and Brad Hoffman, after winning a product design contest held at their university. The box was a collaboration of much hard work on behalf of the Marbles: Brain Workshop team (a division of Marbles: The Brain Store). There were many changes and shapes before the box could become something mass produceable, but the whole time we aimed high to create a box that reflected the fun inside: bright colors, just enough cheeky quotes, and lots of knocking down of tiles!”

Designed by Thingsidid & Nekogato | Country: Hong Kong

“Job Hunting Club is a pleasant card game designed for dysgraphia students to learn about their future pathways after school. The concept of this card game is based on the Holland Occupational Themes (RIASEC) which represents a set of personality types described in a theory of careers and vocational choices.

We created the entire game starting with the identity, including distinctive character design of different careers, a set of colorful function cards, and wooden game tokens which are all finally packed as a tiny portable wooden boxset.”

“These re-designs of classic Parker Brothers board games stemmed from a desire to de-construct the overdone packaging board games nowadays are so known for. Drawing inspiration from vintage, modernist game box designs, these re-inventions focus on simplistic imagery, experimental typography, and limited color schemes.”

SOCOM Special Forces Media Kit

SOCOM Special Forces Media Kit

Designed by GR/DD | Country: United Kingdom

Brief: In conjunction with the release of third person military shooter SOCOM Special Forces for the PlayStation 3, GR/DD has created this unique media kit. The premise of the game revolves around a revolutionary army that has seized control of one of the world’s most vital waterways; threatening to disrupt the global economy. Your mission is to step into the well-worn boots of the Ops Com, a NATO Operations Commander of an elite, five-man squad and eliminate the threat.

Design: GR/DD has designed a unique inflatable, limited edition media kit that includes a set of documents designed to show off the game’s unique features, such as it’s PlayStation Move control and stunning 3D graphics, as well as housing both a game and asset disc. The design concept stems from the premise of the game itself, designed as an “Aqua Drop Package” dropped from the air and inflated on impact with the waterway, protecting the briefing documents within from the elements and surrounding water. Weapons chart, Move controller instructions, map, surveillance photos, game and assets disc and dog tags form the contents of this military themed briefing package.

“The A-1 Scrabble designer edition. The purpose of this project was to revive an old, but loved game: Scrabble. The idea was to excite people about typography by giving them the ability to choose what font their scrabble set would come in. The set would come in the font of your choice or with an assorted font pack. The scrabble board and interior box are made out of solid walnut, and the exterior box is made from birch. Each of the 6 board pieces is magnetized to fit together perfectly and each piece slides nicely into its respective slot in the box and is secured by interior magnets as well. The interior of the exterior box as well as the bottoms of the 6 board pieces are lined with cork, to protect them while in use.”

SET

SET

SET

Designed by Allen Choi | Country: United States

“SET is an award-winning, visual perception card game that is played around the world. For a design exercise, I wanted to explore a contemporary direction for its identity and package. The beauty of this game is in the cards, which feature iconic shapes and colors that, in a way, become a powerful identity in itself. For the logo, I was able to arrange these shapes into the word “SET” while keeping to the game’s definition of a set. For the packaging, I was inspired by the game’s origin: it was created by a population geneticist as a tool to understand different gene combinations. The design’s sterile and clean aesthetic is similar to the look of packages you may find in a laboratory.”
