“Design studio Horse has created the brand identity and packaging for TÅPPED, leading the creation of the organic birch water market in the UK.

Considered nature’s detox, birch water is a traditional drink and medicinal ingredient in Finland. Filtered from the roots up through the trunks of birch trees, the water, or sap, collects vital minerals and vitamins and is full of the antioxidant manganese.

“Although a traditional springtime drink in Finland and other parts of the world such as Canada, tree waters are a totally new concept to consumers in the UK”, comments Ian Firth, creative partner at Horse.

“Clarity of product communication was therefore paramount, so we used the packaging structure to our advantage. To help communicate provenance, the water is packaged in a cylindrical paperboard can which we designed to resemble a real birch tree. This helps overcome some of the challenges of communicating an unusual new product, but equally distinguishes the water from other beverages.”

“Design studio Horse has worked with the UK-based Makers & Merchants to create the packaging for over 40 eclectic food and homeware products, each one made by a specialist artisan.

Horse created the brand name, identity and packaging for every product, ensuring the artisans behind each one had their stories of quality, craftsmanship and collaboration expressed through the different designs.

“The brand name, Makers & Merchants, reflects the approach to product creation, while the strict colour palette and bold graphic style ensures a sense of family,” explains Ian Firth, creative partner at Horse.  “This allowed the freedom to playfully reflect the personality of both the product and artisan behind it.”

“Cavalierino is a small winery in the beautiful high hills of Poggiano within a stone’s throw from the historical towns of Montepulciano and Pienza just south of Siena, Tuscany, Italy. 155 prime acres of vineyards, olive groves, woods and cypress trees are bathed in a soft, golden Tuscan light.

“It is very difficult for a new small winery to emerge in the prime wine producing region of Tuscany. My strategic approach embraced such a handicap with enthusiasm – says Creative Director Lorenzo Ottaviani.

“Under my vision, Cavalierino – little horse in Italian – became a metaphor for David against Goliath: the underdog against the powerful and Tuscan wineries. Cavalierino’s wine production is small but the wines have a great personality and are getting noticed by the critics and the public. I designed the Cavalierino’s brand and packaging to be highly distinctive with a clean, fresh, colorful language that is a complete departure from the rhetorical designs employed by the established wineries. In a store environment Cavalierino’s wines command shelf-attention and once you taste them then you fall in love.”
