“Premium spirits company William Grant & Sons, has commissioned international creative design agency, threebrand, to launch its new Ghosted Reserves. 

Part of William Grant & Sons Rare Cask Reserves programme, the ‘ghosted vattings’ will offer consumers the opportunity to access some of the rarest Scotch whisky stocks, from distilleries no longer in operation.  

threebrand’s remit was to design both a label set and secondary packaging to complement the unique story of the Ghosted Reserves. Both were to be premium and tactile. 

Malcolm Thomson, associate creative director at threebrand, commented: “A palette of grey tones was selected to reflect the ghostly nature of the vattings, drawing on themes of opacity.”

The refreshed look applies across the brand portfolio, with distinctive new shapes for each bottle in the range, new presentation gift boxes, labelling, bespoke typefaces and a visual identity all inspired by Dewar’s® remarkable heritage, craft and provenance.

Ivan Bell, the packaging design group’s managing director, explains, ‘Working closely throughout with the Dewar’s® brand team, we went on a journey back to the origins of the brand. The Dewar’s® story is such a rich and authentic tapestry it made complete sense for us to incorporate this across all the packs. Using light contemporary touches we’ve allowed Dewar’s® to wear its considerable heritage with pride, tell the real story behind this great true scotch and reinvigorate the brand.”

“Westward Whiskey is a very small bottling of rare and original American malt whiskey, distilled and bottled by House Spirits Distillery in Portland, Oregon. Made from 100% malted barley grown in the Pacific Northwest, Westward is fermented with ale yeast for exceptional character, and double pot distilled and matured in two-char American oak barrels.

The visual language was designed to reflect Westward’s original take on a traditional and well-respected spirit, and to further establish Westward as a premier offering. Each element of the label was developed with this focus in mind. The branding salutes Westward’s exploratory approach to making whiskey while the smaller sized bottle emphasizes the specialty of the spirit in hand. Details like beveled embossing, black and gold foil, and a wax seal closure were used to encourage the tactile experience of enjoying whiskey.”

“Task: To create a new standout and authentic whisky brand for the Russian market and beyond that would help make the world of whisky accessible.

Scope: Strategy, brand identity, naming, brand language and tone of voice, structure and graphics.

Solution: The new brand and packaging design challenges the category standards and creates a new language for the whisky market. The brand equities are ownable to the Gild and designed to work as recognisable signposts for the whisky community. The brand identity, inspired by letterpress, is bold and authentic and communicates a high level of craftsmanship, clarity and refinement. The name refers back to the guilds of London – the masters and the craftsmen – but has a double meaning with ‘gild’ also referring to the gold standard. The bottle states that the whisky is ‘conceived in London, born in Scotland’ to establish its Western heritage and desirable credentials that the primary Russian audience is seeking.”

“There are some things that money just can’t buy. The Johnnie Walker Directors Blend is one of them. Created annually by Johnnie Walker Master Blender, Jim Beverage, the exclusive Directors Blend isn’t available for sale, instead it is given out as “a personal gift to esteemed friends” of Johnnie Walker. Every year a unique edition is produced. Throughout the course of this year, Diageo will gift 504 individually numbered bottles of the 2012 edition.

In keeping with tradition, the bottle for the Directors Blend is designed by one of Diageo’s design partners; creative agency, LOVE was invited to design the bottle for the 2012 Blend. Instead of using the label to describe the contents of the bottle, LOVE chose to use it to celebrate the recipient of the Blend, drawing inspiration from Johnnie Walker’s Keep Walking philosophy.”

“Mahony & Sons Public House, a premium and authentic Irish pub in Vancouver, created their own custom blend of Irish Whiskey for their valued guests and patrons. As the cask was on display in the centre of the pub, Mahony & Sons called on St. Bernadine to design a cask for their Mahony & Sons Proprietors’ Special Blend that complemented their brand, while also communicating the special handcrafted nature of this select premium Irish Whiskey, carefully mellowed in a sherry conditioned cask. The cask, affectionately  called “The Good Woman” pays homage to a Mahony ancestor who owned a “Good Woman Pub” in the 1870’s.”

A small tag was printed to accompany the whiskey bottle, leaving a place for a handwritten thank you message. All materials were printed by hand using a 305 mesh screen to ensure that all the details came through accurately on both the box and the tag.”
